October Book Club- The Handmaid's Tale

  • 23 October 2019 19:30 - 21:00
  • 138 High St, Stourbridge DY8 1DW, UK

In October, we are returning to dystopian literature by reading Margaret Atwood's 'A Handmaid's Tale'. In a recent Guardian interview, following the release of 'The Testaments' the sequel to 'A Handmaid's Tale', Atwood stated that "everything in this future dystopia has happened somewhere already". (https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/sep/10/the-testaments-by-margaret-atwood-review) Echoes of Atwood's fictional 'Republic of Gilead' can be seen today with the decision to make abortion illegal in a number of US states. 'The Handmaid's Tale', now also a popular TV series, offers us a chance to reflect deeply on modes of oppression and how they might be resisted. We will be meeting in the Morning Room of The Talbot. Please bring £1 if you wish to avail yourself of the tea and coffee. This event is open to people who are not members of the Labour Party but enjoy literature and lively political discussions.

North Warwickshire Labour's 2019 election result may have been disappointing, but we should be proud of the fact that we achieved the fifth-best result for a Labour group on a leave voting district council and were just 250 votes away from snatching control from the Tories. It would be fantastic to see as many members as possible come to our quiz, and please share this event far and wide, bring friends and family and together, we can turn North Warwickshire red.

Effective Doorstep Conversations - S&MLP Community Organising

  • 26 October 2019 09:30 - 12:00
  • Kingshurst & District Labour Club, Clopton Crescent, Birmingham B37 6QU, UK

In 2017, Labour succeeded in securing more votes than in any election since 1945! In large part that was due to training thousands of activists in persuasion style canvassing. We not only changed people’s voting intentions but successfully managed to encourage those that were not expected to vote to vote. This approach builds on, but doesn’t replace our ‘Voter Identification’ work. We want to put community organising at the heart of Solihull & Meriden Labour Party’s work and ‘Effective Doorstep Conversations’ training is part of a series of modules. Please register so that we can plan the event more effectively. Please arrive from 9.30 for refreshments. The training will start promptly at 10.00am.
